William Thornton Carter was traveling with his parents, William Ernest Carter and Lucile Carter, and his sister, Lucile Polk Carter, and they all boarded Titanic at Southampton, on Wednesday, 10th April, 1912, bound for Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.

Also traveling in the Carter entourage were three members of the family's staff. Charles Augustus Aldworth was William Ernest Carter's chauffeur, Alexander Cairns was William Ernest Carter's valet, and Auguste Serreplan, Lucile Carter's maid.

Lucile Carter, Lucile Polk Carter, William Thornton Carter and Auguste Serreplan all managed to board lifeboat 4. William Ernest Carter managed to board lifeboat collapsible C, but Charles Augustus Aldworth and Alexander Cairns were both lost, and their bodies were not recovered.
