Mini Biography

Elizabeth Hocking had two sons, Richard George Hocking and Sidney Hocking, who had previously emigrated to Akron, Ohio, and now she was to join them with various members of her family. Richard George Hocking returned to England to assist his mother and members of the family to make the move. This large group was made up of Elizabeth Hocking, her son, Richard George Hocking, her sister, Ellen Wilkes, her daughters, Ellen Hocking and Emily Richards, and her two grandsons, William Rowe Richards, and Sibley George Richards.

All seven members of the Hocking/Richards party boarded the Titanic at Southampton, England, on Wednesday, 10th April, 1912, and most of them were bound for Akron, Ohio, the exception being Ellen Hocking, who was traveling to Schenectady, New York in order to get married.

Elizabeth Hocking, Ellen Hocking, Emily Richards, Sibley George Richards and William Rowe Richards all managed to board lifeboat No. 4, and Ellen Wilkes managed to board lifeboat No. 16, and they all survived the sinking of Titanic.

Richard George Hocking was lost in the sinking of the Titanic, and his body was not recovered or identified.
