Georgic I was a livestock carrier, and she was constructed at the Belfast yard of Harland and Wolff in 1895 for the White Star Line, and she was launched on the 22nd June, 1895. Like Cevic, Georgic I was built to fill the gap in trade caused by the loss of the Naronic, in 1893, and for that reason, she was the largest livestock carrier yet built. Georgic I made her maiden voyage, between Liverpool and New York, on the 18th August, 1895. In service, Georgic I was a little too big, and because of her size, there was a limit on the ports that could accommodate her, so she found herself on the New York run throughout her career.
On the 10th December, 1916, Georgic I was travelling between Philadelphia, Brest and Liverpool, with 1,200 horses, and 10,000 barrels of oil, plus some wheat, when she was shelled, with one killed, and then Georgic I was captured 500 miles East South East of Cape Race. Georgic I was then sunk by the merchant raider Möwe, which had the dubious claim of sinking the most tonnage during World War 1, and Georgic I was the largest vessel sunk during her sorties.
