Gaelic II was built at the Belfast shipyard of Harland and Wolff for the White Star Line, in 1885. Gaelic II, together with her sister ship, Belgic II, were constructed to operate on the Occidental & Oriental Pacific services.
Gaelic II was launched on the 28th February, 1885, and her maiden voyage, between Liverpool and New York, began on the 18th July, 1885, and on the 10th November, Gaelic II made her first Pacific sailing.
In the May of 1904, the contract with Occidental & Oriental was cancelled, and on the 13th December that year, Gaelic II made her final voyage out of San Francisco. From Hong Kong, Gaelic II returned to the U.K., leaving just Coptic and Doric I on the route.
In 1905, Gaelic II was overhauled at Harland and Wolff, and in March, she was sold to the Pacific Steam Navigation Company, and renamed Callao. Callao served on the Liverpool, Valparaiso to Callao route, but she was only a stopgap until the arrival of the Quillota, which was due in 1907.
In the September of 1907, Callao was broken up at Briton Ferry, in South Wales.
