A thief stole a piece of Titanic memorabilia from a Millville home Tuesday.
According to a police report, someone stole a piece of coal salvaged from the 1912 R.M.S. Titanic wreck, along with cash, gold jewelry and a desktop, from a home in the 1000 block of Buck Street, The Daily Journal said in an online report.
According to police, the owner returned home to find a door open, a safe cracked and $2,500 missing - and then noticed the items had been stolen.
While the Titanic coal holds sentimental and historic value, the monetary value pales in comparison to that of the gold jewelry ($4,000) or Hewlitt Packard desktop computer. Pieces of Titanic coal are listed on the auction Web site eBay in the $30-40 range. The coal was salvaged in a 1994 expedition of the wreckage and can easily be purchased on the Internet.
