Police investigate theft of Titanic coal from woman's home

Postby Andrew Clarkson » Fri Oct 30, 2009 7:59 am

MILLVILLE — A piece of coal from the RMS Titanic was reported stolen from a residence Tuesday following a burglary, according to police.

The 54-year-old female owner of the coal stated someone broke into her home, on the 1000 block of Buck Street, sometime between 7:45 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Tuesday and took the coal and its accompanying black box with a stamp indicating its authenticity.

Other items taken from the home include $2,500 in cash stolen from a bedroom safe and $100 in change, belonging to another resident of the house, a 46-year-old man. Also reported stolen was a $1,000 Toshiba laptop computer, $4,000 in gold jewelry and a $1,200 Hewlett Packard desktop computer, all belonging to the female resident.

The coal had been kept in the dining room, according to police.

The pair keeps a dog in the back yard of the residence. Both stated the dog can be aggressive “with people he doesn’t know.”

Police are investigating the case. No arrests have been made and so far none of the stolen items have been recovered.

The Titanic was an Olympic-class passenger liner, the largest of its kind at the time it was built. It sank during its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York in April 1912 after striking an iceberg in the North Atlantic.

The Titanic is the most famous shipwreck ever and is synonymous in modern English with disaster, failure, etc., so why do the media feel the need to print a brief history, such as that last line there?

I'm just impressed that the media got it correct in identifying the Titanic as an "Olympic-class" vessel. Someone did their homework.
