(Norfolk, VA) -- After 15 years of legal quibbling over who owns the title to thousands of Titanic artifacts, a hearing that opened on Monday could soon determine ownership.
Atlanta-based Premier Exhibitions has asked the court to either award it sole ownership of the artifacts or a cash award of 110-million dollars, the amount the company contends the Titanic objects are worth.
The company was the first to retrieve artifacts from the site in 1987.
A federal court in Norfolk ruled 15 years ago that it had maritime authority over the wreckage.
Testimony is expected to be completed in a week.
It could be months before the judge makes a ruling.
The Titanic sank off the coast of Newfoundland in April 1912, killing more than 15-hundred people.
