5,000 Titanic artefacts could be returned to Ireland

More than 5,000 Titanic artefacts could be returning to Ireland after a Hollywood legend launched a €190million rescue mission.

Director James Cameron, 62, whose 1997 Oscar-winning film is the second highest-grossing box office hit of all time, has teamed up with Dr Robert Ballard who discovered the wreck 32 years ago.

And the pair are now working with the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich and the Royal Geographical Society to return 5,500 artefacts to where the Titanic was built and launched in Belfast.

Dr Ballard revealed the rescue plan at a court hearing in the US 12 days ago.

Last night a source close to Mr Cameron said he was “committed” to preserving the relics.

They added: “Jim dived to the site multiple times to film footage for the movie.

“He has an emotional connection to the ship and he has the money and power to make this happen.” The move comes after the revelation the parent company of RMS Titanic Inc, which owns all salvage rights to the wreck, has filed for bankruptcy.

This is the only place these relics should go to. Of course where ever they go someone is going to make money from them but somehow it doesn't seem so bad if they go to Belfast.
