THE WINNING design for a stained glass window to the Titanic crew who perish in the disaster has been revealed this weekend.
The British Titanic Society has held its annual convention at the Southampton’s Grand Harbour Hotel on West Quay Road and it was here that the design for St Mary’s Church was revealed.
The society celebrated its 30th anniversary by a staging a public exhibition attended by hundreds of people which featured rare artefacts, including sheet music owned by bandleader Wallace Hartley, an original lifejacket and a gold pocket watch saved by a surviving crew member as the Titanic sank beneath him.
John Creamer the treasurer of the society said: “It was a phenomenal success. The Titanic Society is very pleased to have played a big part in raising funds for this important project.”
The Convention included a Gala Dinner and the Southampton Mayor Councillor Cathie McEwing was one of the attendees. At the dinner a charity auction took place and this raised over £2000 for the window making the memorial another step closer. The total cost of the window will be £35,000 and so far over £32,000 has been raised.
