BBC orders 360Production's 'Britannic' docudrama

UK pubcasters BBC2 and BBC Northern Ireland have commissioned London and Northern Ireland-based producer 360Production to develop a centenary docudrama on the sinking of the Titanic‘s sister ship, the HMHS Britannic.

Tragic Twin: The Britannic Disaster will explore how and why the ocean liner sank three times faster – a total of 55 minutes – than the Titanic, which famously sank in April of 1912 in the North Atlantic Ocean, four days into its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City.

Presented by Kate Humble and Andy Torbet (pictured), the film utilizes eye-witness accounts, as well as unpublished diaries and letters, from survivors of the Britannic tragedy to bring the disastrous journey to life when the ship, then serving as a hospital ship, was hit by an underwater mine off the Greek island of Kea during World War I, killing 30 people. More than 1000 people survived the attack.

The film will also follow Torbet as he dives underwater to investigate the wreck in Greece, while Humble ventures to Belfast to track down some of the descendants of survivors to share their stories.

Renny Bartlett serves as producer and director, with 360Production’s Emma Parkins and Justin Hardy as executive producers. BBC commissioning editors Justin Binding and Diene Petterle ordered the doc.
