The first letter written on the Titanic by an excited visitor before the liner embarked on its doomed voyage has surfaced 104 years later - revealing its author’s tragic story.
Paul Danby left the ill-fated ship in Southampton after a quick look round while visiting a passenger, but not before he took the chance to write a letter home on Titanic-headed notepaper.
While he was thankful he was not on board when the ship struck an iceberg and sank with the loss of 1,522 lives five days later on April 15, 1912, Mr Danby’s good fortune did not last and he was killed by the Nazis in World War Two .
The letter has been kept by his children all these years and is now being sold at auction for £15,000.
The letter, written in German, was penned on April 10, 1912 in Southampton.
