KINGSTON - The ever-present fascination with the sinking of the Titanic is powering a pair of Kingston students into a nation-wide contest to see who best captures a piece of Canada's history on video.
Jordan Harry, from Calvin Park Public School, and Ezra Saunders-Scholes, from R.G. Sinclair Public School, both did projects on the Titanic for the recent regional history fair in Kingston and both were picked to enter an online contest that requires entrants to turn their project into a three-to-four minute video. The public can then vote for their favourite.
The contest, the first of its kind, is run by Canada's History Society, a charitable organization dedicated to bringing the country's history to the public at large. It publishes Canada's History magazine, formerly The Beaver, as well as online and educational programs.
The inaugural Canada's History Young Citizens program partnered with the heritage fairs that are held across the country, at which students present their projects on Canadian icons, heroes and events.
The 200 students from across Canada chosen to take part in the Young Citizens video project are all aged 10 to 16 and were the top finishers in their local heritage fairs.
