“Titanic the Musical” will be performed by the Voices of Canton Inc. (VOCI) at 8 p.m. Saturday, June 2, and 3 p.m. Sunday, June 3, on stage in the Lions Lincoln Theatre, 156 Lincoln Way E., Massillon.
This concert version, a full Broadway show in concert format, marks VOCI’s first return to Broadway productions in many years, according to director Loren Veigel. “In an attempt to recreate the true historic account, the writers included numerous crew and passengers,” Veigel said. There are 41 leads and lots of choral work, he said.
The performances commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic in April 1912. The show, with book by Peter Stone and music and lyrics by Maury Yeston, opened in 1997 on Broadway and earned five Tony Awards, including awards for Best Musical, Book, Original Musical Score, Orchestrations and Scenic Designer.
VOCI will be joined by an orchestra for the performances. Veigel is musical director and Lee Lavery is production manager.
