Got to visit the Titanic Branson, and let me tell you, I enjoyed myself! Upon receiving the boarding pass, I looked at the name, and I instantly knew my outcome. Telling the crew member that I am a long time Titanic buff, he decided to pick my brain! He asked what ship picked up the bodies, I said Mackay- Bennet, very good, I knew my stuff.

As usual, I pointed out stuff about the ship, using the model in the entry way, to some observers. Hey, I'm playing my part of Joseph Boxhall!

What took my breath away was the grand staircase. Beautiful, simply beautiful.

Even the recreations of the bridge, marconi room, first and third class staterooms and corridors were outstanding. Basically, everything that was re-created was spot on.

The ham in me spent some minutes tapping out cqd, cqd, sos, sos de mgy.

Trying out the sloping decks gave me a proper insight on what everyone went through. Sticking my finger in the 28 degree water was no picnic.

By stroke of luck was able to purchase some reprints on Titanic survivor stories. Too bad the Shipbuilder wasn't among them.

From where I'm camping, the first thing I see in the morning and the last thing I see at night, is the TITANIC!

Just to give you how excited I was to see it, just as soon as I set up camp, I went to the museum. Will I visit again? YOU BET.

Glad to hear you've enjoyed the museum attraction. I took the liberty of passing along your observations to Mary Kellogg-Joslyn; the crew at the ship will enjoy reading about your visit.

I'll give you credit for camping in the middle of the humidity that we are going through -- it's pretty steamy out there tonight.

Again, wish that I could have gotten down to meet you -- perhaps on your next visit.

Glad to hear that you also enjoyed Titanic Branson. Kind of easy to see why I am always recommending that you visit there. It doesn't hurt to take your camera to the museum attraction -- there are some good photo opportunities outside the ship! But you are right -- photography isn't allowed inside.

Question:

I live really far away from Branson (way up in Seattle) and I was wondering what's the best way to get down there? I can't drive, it would take too long. So should I fly into Kansas City or St. Louis? Which is closer?

I would LOVE to see the Titanic Branson so much! Sadly I don't think I could talk my parents into it.... :?

One day hopefully.

For those flying in from the coasts, Kansas City is somewhat closer. From there you can either catch a puddle jumper to the Springfield Branson National Airport, or just rent a car from KC or St. Louis and drive down to Branson. Alternately, if you fly in to Springfield, again, you can rent a car for the last 45 miles or so.

Hope you can make it!

But I probably won't make it until I've moved out of my parents house, made tons of money, and can afford to go on Vacation....that might be like another 10 years or more! I hope Titanic branson will still be there....

Good pictures -- thanks for sharing them.

Just a hint -- using the webcam control on the Titanic Branson website, you can actually zero in on the builder's plate and read the words!

Hi Tim,
I have tried using the Branson webcam but everytime is says "disconnected" :(

Hey I saw you are in Missouri -- do you know how long it would take to get from St. Louis to Branson? My friend's family just moved to St. Louis and they would like to go and want to know how long it would take and how far it is from them.

Alysia,

I just tried the Titanic Web Cam and it worked fine. It does require a Java Script application, so you may have a computer setting that isn't allowing you to use it.

It'll take about 4 to 4 1/2 hours to go from the St. Louis City limits to Branson. That depends too on how many times you stop at Jack in the Box, and how heavy your foot it. But it is a straight shot west on Interstate 44 to US Highway 65 south. (Hope they -- and you -- can make the trip!)

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the information! :) I have been to see Titanic Branson -- truly wonderful! :D I wish I lived closer.
I think 4-4 1/2 hours would be nothing to them; they drove straight through from Colorado! I will pass the information onto them.
It is possible that my computer isn't allowing me to use the webcam.... I have Java but not a recent version because for some reason I have to have an older version to access my online college classes. Weird, I know. I'll have to try it on another computer where I can update the Java software.

Thanks again!

Hey Tim,
Am thinking seriously of making another trek over to Branson in the next few weeks as I want to experience the audio tour. I hear it is awesome. We'll have to try to synchronize our schedules to get together again. Am thinking I'll come soon after Labor Day so the summer crowds will have abated a little.

Hey, Phil -- since I haven't yet heard the audio tour, would love to head through with you! We may be in the middle of moving, but will certainly make the time to get together with you. Let's keep in touch on that.

Moving. What a terrible word. Let's just say that the Titanic books and files get packed last, and unpacked first!

Yes, love 'em or hate 'em! And to think I am going to school for a degree in computers... #-o
Branson is filled with a lot of things to do. But Titanic was the main reason why I went to Branson. But there my family and I saw a show, shopped, went to the Hollywood Wax Museum, the toy museum, and drove up and drown the strip finding other things to do. We only had two days there but we made the most of it.
I finally got the webcam to work.... I'm on AOL which I should have known that was the problem. So I switched over to internet explorer and tried it and it worked! :D
Love your theory about packing: "Let's just say that the Titanic books and files get packed last, and unpacked first!"

15 tons of sand to be used in Branson Titanic sculpture

Postby Timothy Trower » Sat Sep 08, 2007 1:09 am

Award-winning sculptors will attempt to build the world’s largest Titanic sand sculpture from a 15-ton mountain of sand Sept. 20-23 at The World’s Largest Titanic Museum Attraction in Branson, a museum press release said.

The second annual ice carving competition at Titanic Branson was held this past Saturday. The weather was cold but sunny -- a perfect combination for the ice carving.

Here is a link to an article in our local rag:

http://tinyurl.com/29ed76

At the right side of the article at the top of the page is a link to a gallery of photographs taken by a press photographer. (These articles generally become unavailable after about a week.)

Plans were publicly announced for the ice carving competition to continue at least five years with an ultimate goal of hosting a National ice carving competition sometime in the future.

Kudos to Mary Kellogg-Joslyn and Kristina Hagey -- they hosted a great event that was well attended and well received.

I went to the TItanic museum in Branson and it was so cool! I only live a couple of hours aways from Branson, so it was well worth the drive!
I saw so many interesting things and a lot of them were from survivors of the Titanic. My favorite item was probably the watch they took from an unknown body they pulled out of the frigid water the next morning after the awful night. The watch froze fifteen minutes after the man fell into the icy water that night and it still shows the time of when the Titanic sank. How amazing and historical is that?! I think it would be wise for those who are interested in the Titanic to
visit the museum. You won't regret it!

I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed your trip to Titanic Branson. Like yourself, I live just a short distance away from the museum attraction, and take many trips to Branson each year to visit -- and contemplate.

Seeing the watch is always a sobering image -- that picture is fixed in my mind as I write this post. The letters between John Gill and his wife are particularly poignant, as is the correspondance dealing with the recovery of his body and subsequent burial at sea. I always find something new each time to study and think upon ...

Tim,

It was nice to hear from you and can relate to my love of the museum. I have only been there once and would love to go again soon.
I agree with you on the letters from John Gill and his beloved wife.
I have been dwelling on the Titanic for several months and have quite recently been studying about the passengers.
I have always loved the Titanic, but seeing the museum brought me even closer to it. It's so sad to think the Titanic is vanishing in the ocean.
At least she is in the hearts of those who love her.

Hello Tim and Shyan. How I envy you guys living so close to Branson. I visited Ramsgate this last weekend as there was a Titanic exibition on there. Not quite the same scale as Branson. But worth a visit. There was a good model of Carpathia. Does Branson have a model of Carpathia?. They probably got Carpathia. Some thing Ramsgate has that Branson doesn't is about a mile away from the exibition is "Sundowner". The yacht once owned by Charles Lightoller.

Ken,

I may live close to Titanic Branson, but I envy you living so close to the birthplace of the ship itself! When I make it to England one of these days, I'm going to be terribly conflicted about where to go, and what to see ...

Branson does not have a Carpathia model, but does have Peter Davies-Gardner's beautiful model of the Titanic.

Hello Tim. You are correct in that living so close to Titanics birth place could be called better than being surrounded by incredible Titanic exibitions. But I have not yet been there. I do keep promising myself that I will get there one day. You probably know that the whole area is being redeveloped. So I guess by the time I get to Belfast there wont be much left. Although I believe the pump house and the dry dock are staying. One place I do go to each year on April 10th is Southampton. I get there at about 7am. Park at the waters edge about a mile from where Titanic sailed from. You cant get to the actual dock as it is a working dock. I watch a movie (Titanic) and a documentary (Titanic). Then the maritime museum is open and being in Southampton it has a good selection of Titanic things. A visit to the mall then home. It makes a nice day out. And to give an idea as to how big Titanic was. There is usually one or two passenger liners in Southampton that are larger than Titanic. But I would trade one of these visits for a trip to Branson.

Ken,

Don't let that "magic ball" get you down! You have to come and visit Branson to experience all the Museum has to offer. I have to agree with Tim. How amazing it would be to live in the country of the Titanic's birthplace! Wow... you are very lucky and I would love to visit Southampton. I have also loved Ireland and look forward to visiting it one day.
Come and visit Branson soon! If you get the chance to come, maybe Tim and I could meet you there at the Museum? I have only been there once and would love to visit it again.
It would be nice to meet both of you!

I had the great honor of being a special guest New Year’s Eve at Titanic—The World’s Largest Titanic Museum Attraction, Branson Missouri. I signed so many books that I think I was still doing it in my sleep that night. But it was a wonderful experience, thanks to the tremendous staff at the museum and the many patrons who spoke to me after their tour.

If you are in Branson, I highly recommend the museum. For me, the highlight was the re-creation of the Grand Staircase. I had pictured it so many times while writing Titanic: Relative Fate. To be able to actually stand on the steps was literally breathtaking.

The museum also had an area dedicated to the James Cameron movie which some people thought spoiled the ambiance while others thought it was the best part. There were no salvaged artifacts, as R.M.S. Titanic Inc. retains the right to Titanic’s wreck, so, in that way, the Branson museum wasn’t as somber as the other exhibits.

But, you get a very real, authentic sense of the ship at Titanic Branson. From the iceberg, to the sloping decks, and finally to the touch of 28 degree water, the museum also gives a feel for what it must’ve been like that night. Interspersed with so many mementos, pictures and quotes, Titanic Branson truly is an education and a tour to remember.

Highly recommended! Even if you are not a Titanic fan!

"...the Branson museum wasn’t as somber as the other exhibits."

I dunno ... the emotional impact of this museum attraction is one that I've yet to shake off, regardless of the number of times that I've visited. What once existed as a massive man-made structure, opulent and magnificient, is now represented by only a handful of objects ... all that is left of the ship are relics like these, paltry reminders that over 1,500 people lost their lives with the ship.

Glad to hear you enjoyed your visit; we will be returning this weekend to see the changes in the various exhibits (Titanic Branson is closed January 12 thru 15). For instance, you were among the last to see the Discovery room as it has been since the museum opened in 2006.

I can tell you that seeing this view in person is even better. Although I'm not aware of photographs of the Olympic decorated for Christmas for comparision, this gives an idea of what might have been had the Titanic survived.
