3D Titanic Model

Postby Hudizzle » Tue Mar 03, 2009 1:38 pm

Hello! My name is Kyle! I'm new to this particular forum, but not new to the general Titanic scene, or Titanic modeling. I'm also on the TRMA forum (though not really active lately), and the hangsim forums, or "Virtual Sailor" forum. I've been most active there, and for the last several weeks, I have been working on a titanic model for both the game, and, frankly, also to make neat-O renders.
The model is still a work-in-progress, and is being built in Maya, with textures made by myself in Photoshop, with plans and references being implemented from the book "Titanic: A Modelmaker's Manual", and "Titanic: The Ship Magnificent Volumes 1&2", along with a 1/350 scale model which I built late last year.. I'll have to put pictures of that on a separate thread later...
I'm not sure if any of you have seen my work earlier elsewhere, so I thought I'd spread the word and make a thread here.
Also, before I continue... this model is not 100% accurate, and i'm not a pro-modeler with 3D programs, plus, I'm a tad limited with both my computer and what the game can handle, so I have to sacrifice detail for performance. I will, however, attempt to make improvements and add even more details to the model once it is finished for Virtual Sailor, after which I can make more renders and whatnot, as I see fit. And, as I said, this is a work in progress. Now, here are pictures from beginning to latest:

Alright, that's all there is for now!
I'll update here and on the other forum, when the time comes.. very soon!
I'm working on the vents and such for now.
I hope I didn't post too many pictures!
I'm not a very conservative type when it comes to that stuff.
Oh! I also made a quick video of the model a short while ago. You can find it here:

Much like seeing every stage of her in the construction. I think you and the one who made the Titanic for Ship Sim 2008 should really join forces and come out with a really sweet Titanic.

Good job on that one and keep more coming.

Hi!

I know its been a little while since I've updated here.
Since my first post here, I have done more work on the model and textures... I have also released a beta, so you can try it in Virtual Sailor!
Two betas, actually.

The first comes in two versions and has the original shaded textures, and is around 100mb in zipped form.
The first version includes the Grand staircase.
The second version does not.

Here are the downloads to the 1st and 2nd versions:

1: http://postdownload.filefront.com/13468 ... e632dfa6f4

2: http://postdownload.filefront.com/13470 ... e632dfa6f4

However, after some people tested those, there were some issues, and I had to drastically change the textures, making many of them tiled, which doesn't allow for shading like the old version, but does allow for mostly better performance, shorter load times, and a much smaller file size.
The latest beta is only 20mb zipped, and can be downloaded here:

http://postdownload.filefront.com/13485 ... e632dfa6f4

Now, I'll put up some of the latest pictures.
The following pictures are of the latest version of the model, without the shaded textures. The last couple will show the 30 foot lifeboats I've built for the model...

That is all for now. If any of you have virtual sailor and try the beta, please let me know how they work, what frame rates you get, etc.

Cheers!

Oh man, I remember attempting this in Sketchup aged 14. I was incessantly pleased with my efforts, and it was rather good if I do say so myself, but it was SO poly heavy, and yours just blasts it out of the water! *cough*

Keep it up mate, can't wait to sail her.
Thanks,

*Update!*

Well, a rather big one, really. I've been keeping things up at the VS forum, mainly in tiny steps, so here it's more like one big step.
I've added a lot since the last update I posted here. Just a few things:

Added the 30 foot lifeboats.
Re textured the decks, bulkheads, walls, and vents.
Completely re textured the hull, adding transparent sidelights.
Added night lighting.
Added various details, such as the steam winches, docking bridge, and masts.
Re-scaled and re textured many of the deck fittings.
Started adding new shadow effects.

Also, as of now, I've been working hard on a detailed bridge/wheelhouse area, along with the chart room, and simple corridors through the officer's quarters.

First off, Here is the link for downloading the latest beta:

http://startdownload.filefront.com/1368 ... 32dfa6f4//

If you try it, and it does not load, or crashes Virtual Sailor, then it may be due to the rather large hull textures.
If that happens, please download these reduced hull textures and place them in the folder for this ship, overwriting the old files:

http://startdownload.filefront.com/1369 ... 32dfa6f4//

I have also made a new video of this WIP:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=buokfOps ... annel_page

Finally, on little thing about the beta... When you first load it, the lights in the windows will be on by default. You cannot turn them off. You can, however, cover them up, as I have provided a way to do that. When on the ship, press your "page down" kep 12 times. This will make the "day windows" show up. Turn turn the lights back on, press your "page up" key. Turn turn the lights back off, usually, just press "page down" a few times again.

Now for the screen shots.... These are soem of the many new screens and such I've posted on my WIP thread on the VS forum:

Nice work! Please do keep it coming along. You still need rudder and wings and the propellers. And such. I am glad that you did put on the docking bridge. That thing is very nice none the less.

*BETA!*

I couldn't wait any longer, so I decided to release the next beta.

Download here: (66mb zip)

http://startdownload.filefront.com/1384 ... 32dfa6f4//

Most of you already know about what I've added to the model since the last one, so I won't talk much of the updates. I'll just post a couple parts of the readme included in the file here:

This is the Sixth beta.
Tuesday, June 02, 2009.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
This ship now has night lighting, which is contained in the "lights.x" file. These lights are ALWAYS ON. So if you want to turn them "off", you can hide the lights by turning on the regular windows. To do this, hit your Page Down key 12 times. This will make the regular windows show up, and "turn off" the lights. To turn the lights on, simply press your Page Up key a few times. The model for the regular/day windows is contained in the "Sailbf.x" file.

In addition to night lighting, this ship also hase a bridge which can be toggled on and off as a sail. The bridge is conatined in the "sailsf.x" file.
To make the bridge details appear, press your "delete" key 12 times. To toggle the bridge details off, press your "insert" key a few times.

ALTERNATIVE HULL TEXTURES:
Due to the large size of the default hull textures, a couple people have had issues running this ship with them. To remedy this, I have included an alternate set of hull textures which have been greatly reduced in size, though also in quality (fine details are fuzzier with the lower resolution.) If the model freezes or causes VS to crash, replce the 27 hull textures in the Titanic beta 6.0 folder with the 27 hull textures found in the "Alternative Hull Textures" folder included in this file. That might solve the problem.

--------------

Here is a small list of things different in this beta:

More added to the cranes.
Much of the rigging added.
Funnel texture changed.
Bridge details added in sailsf file, but not yet finished, with more textures added for that in the ship folder.
Grand stair case completely redone with new textures, but not yet finished.
A few more cowl vents added.
More bollards resized.
Navigation lights added.
Collpasibles and emergency cutters added.
Lifeboat rigging ropes/falls added.
Working helm added.
Working rudder added.
Propeller bossings/wings added.
Bow stem and center anchor opening added.
New hatch detail texture added for number 1 hatch.
Shadows added for lifeboats.
Added basic crow's nest, no details added yet.
Added coaling outriggers on outside of A deck.
Added compass platform, but no details added to that yet.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As always, let me know of any problems, and update me on your frame rates.

Oh, and you might notice a goof-up inside the GSC, where the opening in the boat deck doesn't quite match up with the opening in the staircase itself. I'll fix that later.

Finally, some screenshots:

*UPDATE!* + *BETA!*

BIG update, and much nicer version of the ship, in my opinion.

Since the 13th, I have been working a lot on this model (No updates on Poseidon yet).

As you probably know, with beta 8.0, if I was was lucky, I would manage only to pull about 11fps, and it would cause crashes.
I became way too much. Strangely, I still got nearly double the frame rate I got with Dom's France... Only the France didn't cause any crashes, freeze-ups, or graphic glitches.

The old model, with the Grand Staircase and bridge, was well over 500,000 polys.

So, I began to rebuild the entire thing, going through every part, redoing them, repositioning them, deleting tons of polys, and completely replacing or deleting other parts.

The new version of this model has around 250,000 polys.

Here is the basic list of changes from the README:

Deleted MANY polys from many parts of the model

Replaced 3D railings with 2D railings/transparent textures

Added ladders on boat deck

Repositioned many parts of the model

Recut many openings for many of the windows

Replaced all 3D window frames with 2D window frames

Added most of the hand rails

Built new sides for B deck and A deck

Replaced all full-3D benches with mostly 2D benches, using transparent textures for the sides

Redid all beams/ribbing on A deck and B deck

Rounded most of the corners on the deck houses on the Boat deck and A deck

Retextured the decks with a new deck texture

Replaced all fairleads and bollards with new, lower poly models

Rebuilt several deck houses

New textures for windows and railings added to the boat folder

Hull textures reduced in size by a very slight amount

More details added to A deck

General Filesize slightly reduced

........Also note that many "shadows" have been removed at this time. I will remake them.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Now for the beta...

I have yet to make new night lighting, but I will soon.

The Grand Stair Case is not included in this model, and neither is the bridge. The helm is, though, as well as the rudder and props.

Now as I said, I used to get 11fps max with this model. Now, I can get up to 20fps, depending on my settings, though the average is closer to 18fps, which is HUGE improvement for me.

For others, it may be even better. BUT, for those who could not run the model at all before, you likely would still not be able to run it.

Be sure to read the README for the usual info.

You can download it here:

http://www.filefront.com/14085867/Titan ... -9.0.zip//

-----------------------------------------------

Hello, i was wondering if somebody could try this:

(The Reason im using this model is because my CPU can't handle this detailed model unfoutunately i get 1 fps. )

What I did: Turn Sea brightness all the way low.
*Turn water to Reflect/Refract for the reflections.
*Turn Flood light on

For me it looks like this:

(Flood Light off): Image

Flood Light On: Image

I want to see how it would look with this model.

*Update!* (Copied from my post on the Virtual Sailor forum thread)

I spent the last few days working on new vents for the model.

Most of them have been completely rebuilt. They are slightly higher poly than the old ones, and look much better.
I have also placed the masts, rigging and cranes back on the model.
Currently, the model is just under 300,000 polys. If I'm lucky, I can keep the final poly count (not including bridge and other interiors) under 350,000. My own frame rate isn't much better than before though, now, but even a couple fps more is better for me. I'm not sure what the effect will be on other people's systems, though I'm sure it won't work on those computers that also could not handle to old version. After all, any model that can be run well on those computers is probably not a very good and detailed one.
A new beta will be released soon for people to test out, along with a new video.
For now, here are a ton of new screens:
