Lawrence Beesley.

Postby VW1956 » Fri Jul 13, 2012 3:11 pm

Hello. Does anyone know why Lawrence Beesley went to America? Was it a holiday and he intended to come back? or did he have plans to stay there?

The school I work at (Colfes) often play the school Lawrence Beesley worked at (Dulwich) at netball. Next time I take team of girls to play Dulwich I must see if they have anything hanging on a wall about Mr Beesley. Ken.

According to his book he was going to make a tour round the US. If I remember right he was also planning to visit his brother who was living in the US. (So it was more holiday+family visit.)

Curious, did he stay in the US for his tour after the inquiries? Or did he return immediately to Britain?

His book was published soon after the disaster. I found two newspaper accounts. It says he was in Cleveland.

July 5th 1912
Ohio newspaper - The Perrysburg Journal

Hello. Thanks for the info and those two clips from the newspapers of the time. I always thought that Lawrence Beesley was an English teacher but in his book (A modern re-print) it says at one point" it reminded me instantly of an experiment I had shown many times to a form of boys learning the elements of physics". Or did he teach both English and Physics? Ken.

My school teachers used to substitute other classes when another teacher was sick. I think Mr. Beesley may have spread his wings over other subjects as well. You can hear him speak in this short interview.
