Rare Footage Of The Olympic

Rare Footage Of The Olympic

Postby Aaron2010 » Tue Jul 03, 2012 6:39 pm

The Olympic sails passed the Arundel Castle in 1924 and footage of Prince Edward shaking hands with the captain of the Olympic in 1925. You can also spot a man standing 'above' the crowsnest at 1:26. I wonder what he is doing?

Hello Aaron. Great find. Kind of ghostly music as Olympic appears from the fog. Theres a bit of trickery going on here. The piece of film that you ask what is the man doing in the crows nest is of the Olympic entering Southampton. This is a real coincidence as the previous thread I started is asking the very same question. I have just compared the crew standing on the deck in the picture I have and on the movie clip you posted and they are the same. If you have a copy of the special souvenier edition of the Daily Mirror titled 100 Years of the Titanic. The picture showing Olympic entering Southampton is on page 15. The picture is also on the first edition of a dvd and book set titled "Titanic". It's called "Titanic" but they have a picture of Olympic on the front. Doh. This set was released last year with a picture of Titanic on it. Big thanks again for finding and posting. Ken.

Thanks. The footage is the same as the photo above. It was taken in 1925 when Prince Edward was on board. There is also a title card which was shown at the start of the news reel. Here it is:

I think the man was just cleaning the bell and making the ship look smart for Royalty. The crew were probably told to give the ship a good clean. I can imagine the Captain said to the lookout "I want that bell to sparkle and shine".

Hello Aaron2010. When I first noticed that man in the crows nest I really thought he was about to jump which is why I posted it. But Aly said it looks like he has his back to the camera and on closer examination I agreed with Aly. He must have been cleaning the bell and standing on the edge of the crows nest to do it. Ken.
