What Has Happened To The Athena and Princess Danae?

Postby Aaron2010 » Wed Sep 26, 2012 3:26 pm

The cruise ship Princess Danae was supposed to stop in Belfast, Northern Ireland, but the voyage was cancelled. I checked the internet and it said:

Cruise liners Athena and Princess Danae detained in Marseille for debts

Two cruise liners of the Portuguese company Classic International Cruises were arrested in Marseille for debts in bunker and wages to crews. Both cruises were cancelled. Athena was arrested on Sept 13th, Princess Danae on Sept 15th. The Athena was built in 1948. Princess Danae was in built 1955.

Few know that Athena was originally Stockholm, which sank Andrea Doria. Since then she's had many names and has been much hacked about, including the addition of sponsons to reduce rolling. She's a rather weird sight. I was expecting to see her in local waters again this year. Now maybe I won't. I always wonder how she meets SOLAS rules on fireproofing. Here she is at Port Lincoln in 2010.

It seems the whole line is in a general mess. From the Cruise Critic site, I found this, dated early October. As so often in shipping, a horde of companies are involved.

At time of going to press the CIC website was still taking bookings for the Australia cruise. Despite repeated attempts to contact Classic International in Europe, we have been unable to. However, we did get hold of Grant Hunter, managing director of CIC in Australia.

Mr Hunter told us: "The owners of Athena and the five other ship owners of the CIC Group and their bankers in Portugal are continuing to work on a major restructure of the group. This involves not only the five ship-owning companies but 22 companies that provide management, crewing and technical support, therefore the process is complex. The owners of Athena have repeatedly advised Classic International Cruises during the past two weeks that the Athena cruises in Australia this summer will be proceeding as scheduled.”

I guess I might get to see MS Delphin in Port LIncoln. It will make a change from the other delphins I see regularly.
