"Report into the Loss of the SS Titanic: A Centennial Reappr

Postby Achmet Pamba » Fri Oct 28, 2011 11:49 pm

Salaam, everyone.

What began as a collaborative undertaking by a group of researchers from all parts of the world in 2010 has culminated into a new book, "Report Into the Loss of the SS Titanic – A Centennial Reappraisal," The History Press, 2011. The book is the result of many years spent researching, evaluating and analyzing the wealth of evidence that has come to light in the hundred years since 1912. This 400 page book, written by eleven co-authors, follows the basic layout of the 1912 Wreck Commission report into loss of Titanic, providing fascinating insights into the ship itself, the American and British inquiries, the passengers and crew, the fateful journey and ice warnings received, the collision, damage and sinking, taking to the boats and rescue by Carpathia, the circumstances in connection with the SS Californian and SS Mount Temple, and the ramifications that followed the disaster. It is extensively referenced with 830 separate endnotes, contains 127 photos and illustrations, as well as numerous tables. The 10 appendices contain a wealth of information including the name of every crewmember by department who was on board for the transatlantic crossing (including the capacity they held), and the name of every transatlantic passenger who was on board by passenger class. It has an extensively detailed and fully referenced chronology with 245 separate time entries starting from the morning of 10 April 1912 to the evening of 15 April 1912. As one of the co-authors of this book, I commend the web site to your attention.

Have a look at the rogues' gallery and see what the authors look like. Don't miss the link to a film that contains vision I've never seen before of Titanic survivors Edith Rosenbaum, Arthur Lewis and a man I can't identify.

The book will be available as a hardback in November.

I think I saw some of them featured on America's Ten Most Armed And Dangerous. ;)

No matter, I just ordered my copy from Amazon this morning. When you have a work like this put together by the varsity team of Titanic researchers and historians, one would be hard pressed to do better.

Nice seeing the faces of the names of the wonderful authors & researchers we are fortunate enough to have in our forum.

Salaam Achmet, I didn't see your tent, Harem and camels lol. You dress very North American. My Christmas wish list & books to get will have to be your latest books and this one.

Thanks for the info. and link.

Cheers

Salaam, Jim.

Thanks very much for your kind words - I truly hope you'll enjoy reading the book.

By the way, my burnoose was resting comfortably in my lap when the photo was taken, and my riding camel was parked close enough for me to mount her quickly in case of a sudden raid by slavers. :-)

Hello Achmet. Thats a really good link. Lots of Pathe news links from that link you gave. I have not seen that Titanic film. Any idea what year it was made? So now I know what Dave looks like. That would be a good idea foir a new thread putting a picture to your user name. Ken

Salaam, Ken.

Steve Hall has labeled the website's Titanic film as having been taken in February of 1912.

I used to have an avatar showing me wearing my robes and mounted on my riding camel, but the picture disappeared during the recent website meltdown. I'll see if I can find another copy. :-)

Yes, that footage is Titanic in 1912.
The footage on the site isn't permanent. It will be replaced soon with a video clip of one of the authors talking about the book :o.
Now I wonder which one of them it will be . . . , :?.

Achmet,Thanks for posting about this awesome book, with all the well known Titanic experts on board it's sure to be one of the best Books coming out around the centenial. Bruce Beverage posted about it also on the TRMA:
http://titanic-model.com/dc/dcboard.php ... &mode=full
and Bruce states:
The author's that took part in this book are comprised of trusted peers, while Sam edited the whole of it after the work was handed in. No weak hull, conspiracy or iron rivet crack-pots here - just solid, technically accurate writing by people who know their stuff. Accuracy is what Sam is known for, and he chose his co-author's wisely.

I see that Sam edited the book and picked his co-author's wisely due to their Expertise in all things Titanic and it is cool to be able to put a face to their names on the links page and see Bruce and Steve from the TRMA,don't see Art Braunschweiger aboard or as an editor. I totaly agree with with J. Kent Layton where he states on the TRMA thread that Bruce posted:
I feel I have to say to everyone out there: make sure to pick this one up. It's a marvelous piece of research! Regards,Kevin

Achmet, I always enjoyed that avatar you have mentioned & the repartee you shared with your friends. About your burnoose & camel nearby, I trust you, always be prepared. It will be good to see your avatar again.

Ken, I used to have a pic of me avatar, when you mentioned this, I just reworked this now. I use photobucket, upload to this site & url link pics from there. For an avatar, go to the control panel, choose profile, it may take a bit of work with resize to get it to 90 pixels & under 6 kilobytes. It is always nice to see the face & personality which goes to the name.

Hi Kevin,

You wrote: 'don't see Art Braunschweiger aboard or as an editor.'

Art was involved very early on during the concept phase. Unfortunately, prior committments prevented him from continuing with the project. He is well aware of the work.

This project was not an easy undertaking, and I'm sure all my fellow co-authors are somewhat relieved that we were able to achieve the goal that we sought in the time that we had. I think J. Kent Layton summed it up best when he wrote in the book's foreword:

I have watched as members of the group bring in a piece of evidence or broach a controversial point, offering it to the team in the hopes of finding an answer among the team’s shared knowledge. I have then watched in awe as each time, that information has been ‘plugged-in’ to the larger picture. I have seen members of the group passionately debate conflicting evidence, and just when there seems no hope of arriving at the truth, someone produces the key which unlocks the answer. I can tell you that this team is interested in arriving at the facts; nothing else will satisfy them. In this reappraisal, you will find a fully referenced, authoritative and resoundingly comprehensive work which presents the historical picture more clearly than it has ever heretofore been made available.

Hello. Seems like if there were a programme called "Desert Island Books" then this is the one to go for. Ken.
