Shipping Casualty Corner

Postby Michael H. Standart » Fri Dec 30, 2011 5:53 am

A thread started for obvious reasons if you check out the news I'm calling attention to. If it runs aground, sinks, burns, blows up, collides or in some fashion gets in a heaping helping of trouble, this is the place I'll put it.

A crippled oil tanker carrying 54,000 tonnes of oil is resting off Belfast lough. The Genmar Companion has been anchored near the Irish coastline since December 16th and has patiently waited for assistance. The ship is too large to enter Belfast docks for repairs. A ship to ship transfer of oil has been granted and the BW Seine is on her way to the rescue.

Note - (On February 25th 2011 the BW Seine rescued over a dozen men from the sea when the fishing boat 'Faro De Hercules' capsized and sank. The BW Seine deviated from her course and conducted a search and rescue operation which lasted over 16 hours.)

That's the sort of thing you might expect when the bow of the ship is parked on top of a reef. If the first article is any indication, it looks like the reef is having the last laugh!

Wish I could say it's a pleasure, Andy, but of course, it's not. I take no joy in any sort of shipping casualty, but they do happen and this forum has a special interest in this sort of thing, hence my reasons for calling attention to these events when they happen along with any follow up.

Comment: I think it's a safe bet that the Rena is not coming off that reef intact, if ever. If the ship hasn't split in half, it's only a matter of time before it does.
