Oil lamps.

Postby VW1956 » Sat Jan 07, 2012 8:19 pm

Hello. Reading of the improvement firsts incorperated into the Oceanic such as seperate dining chairs instead of benches. Self acting water tight doors etc. Then I read of clean burning sperm oil lamps instead of candles. WHAT!!! I keep thinking well they wont run out with all those men on board. Ken.

Hello VW1956
I've noticed you've gotten a lot of views but no comments. Probably because that was so disturbing. I hardly know anything about the Oceanic or sperm lamps. Something relating to sperm:
I bet the survivors in the lifeboats (I'm refering to the Titanic disaster), especially the ones who where pulled out of the water were so cold and exhausted that they urinated themselves. Of course there'd be no way of knowing that, since I'm assuming people would keep that to themselves.

Hello 882 1/2. You're probably right that some might have urinated themselves. It probably would have been a help at the time as it would have warmed them up a bit. Ken.

Nothing weird here! Sperm oil was oil from sperm whales, which were still being hunted enthusiastically in those day. For the origin of the name, see Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sperm_whale

Hmm, well that's a relief. Okay, I'm not sure which way to steer this topic. Something relating to oil. The Olympic converted from coal to oil in 1919. That must have made people happy; maybe. Technology changes so fast! Do any of you miss the nineties? Krazy how that is already 20 years ago

Hello Dave. Makes me wonder how did someone first find out that the sperm liquid from in the whales head was good to burn.

I bet it didn't make the coalies happy as they would have been put out of work. Ken.

The oil was taken from all the whale's blubber. Read Moby Dick!

Hello 882 1/2. Thats usually the problem with any kind of progress, people get put out of work except for maybe the new technology such as mobile phones and computers as machines were involved with them from the beginning.

Hello Dave. Still puzzles me as to how someone first found out that the oil from a whale was good to burn. I guess someone tried cooking a piece of whale and the oil burnt real well. Now I'm thinking who first decided to catch a whale as I'm sure that the boat they would have been using would have been smaller than the whale. Ken.
