Evergreen Cemetery dotted with Titanic stories

Dick Mueller drove past rows of granite headstones, past larger-than-life statues for the dead, past family mausoleums, over the railroad tracks and through the half of Evergreen Cemetery where five Florida governors and four U.S. Senators are buried.

He stopped the car, got out and began looking for one particular memorial stone.

Even you if spent 35 years managing this cemetery, it can take a minute to find it. But after walking into the Masonic section, he stopped and pointed to one of the simple, flat markers.

“Here it is,” he said.

More than 100 years ago — May 12, 1912 — a local minister was buried here, following huge front-page headlines about his death and what local papers called one of the most elaborate funeral services this city had ever seen. It wasn’t until nearly 90 years later that this marker was laid here.
