What do the elder gods, an ill-fated ocean liner, and the chemical element with the symbol Ti have in common?
The answer can be found in Titanica, this year’s exhibition of new works by members of the Nova Scotia Designer Crafts Council (NSDCC).
“When hearing the word ‘titanic’ most people usually think of the passenger ship that collided with an iceberg and sank off the coast of Newfoundland 100 years ago,” says Susan Hanrahan, NSDCC executive director, in a news release “but the word can be interpreted in many different ways. We challenged our members to create works referencing any of the meanings of the word ‘titanic.’”
The exhibition is comprised of 25 works by 23 craftspeople. Many of the works were inspired by the liner, but a number of the works reference the other meanings of titanic like gigantic, relating to the Titans, or made of titanium.
