The oceanographer who discovered the wreckage of the Titanic said Thursday there was no question he would help Turkey find a downed jet and recover the bodies of its crew off the Syrian coast last week.
Bob Ballard and his crew helped locate the bodies of two missing Turkish airmen and removed them from the sea. The team has been exploring the eastern Mediterranean, Black and Aegean seas for more than a decade, and some members of the crew are Turkish, Ballard said.
"There's no question about what we were going to do," he said in an interview following a news conference at the Mystic Aquarium about his expedition plans. "It was just a question whether we were going to do it immediately, and they wanted it immediately."
Ballard, who is based at the aquarium, said the recovery was not the first in which he participated.
"I've been in these situations before," he said.
