Captain Smith Postcard - It is NOT

Postby Jonathan » Wed Nov 04, 2009 11:43 am

On eBay, as seller has this listed and described as Captain Smith . . . . it is NOT him, although the postcard has already clocked up over a £100.

The smoking room seen in that image is Olympic. As to why its labelled Titanic, only reason I can think of is that 'Underwood & Underwood' who were based in America (New York) subsituted many 'Oly' images as the Titanic after the sinking, due mainly to there being a shortage of published photographs at that time. Why would 'Underwood' send someone all the way to Southampton to photograph a ship that was coming to them in New York. Many of the American based books released about the sinking had Olympic images labelled up as Titanic, almost all of them were copyrighted to 'Underwood'.

I know I posted above that the image looked photoshoped, but I would say the frame to the painting looks more highlighted due to the light streaming in from the windows.

Hi Jonathan,
My knowledge about smoking room on Olympic or Titanic is not so wide and can not
comment or compare but I believe to you. It was just Bloomsbury private invitation
and announcement by private post. In private post I will tell my opinion about many
irregular things related to Titanic I saw on couple web sites.
Unfortunately postcard now worth 255 pounds but to whom?
Do not hesitate to contact me privately. There are to many different colors on the world
except black and white.

You can tell that it is the Olympic by the painting above the fireplace.

The Olympic painting shows the entrance to New York harbor and the Titanic's showed the entrance to Plymouth Harbor with a Warship in the foreground I believe.

The only copy I have of the Plymouth harbor painting is in the Titanic Voices book. The painting pictured there is a recreation by the son of the original artist which I can't post because of Copyright.

Picture is definitely genuine just labeled wrong.

Here are two pictures I have of Captain Smith for refernce. One image is a post sinking card I got from the Gurnsey's Titanic Auction and one was in a Diary I have from the 1890's written aboard the RMS Majestic. Not sure where the writer got it but it is period.

If anybody can tell me more about the last EJ foto I would really appreciate it i have owned it since in the early 80's

Now I am not so sure about what I posted previously about the Painting.

To my best knowledge there are no pictures of the actual painting in Titanic's smoking room. Only the copy painted by Rodney Norman Wilkinson in 1996. Even Walter Lord only had a copy of Olympic's painting which was copied from the Olympic's for the film A Night to Remember.

PC 1912-1913 I believe:

Here is a post card from the 20's 30's showing the Olympics Smoking Room.
