Margaret Ann Watson Ford and her husband had five children between them, but her husband had deserted her and the family, leaving them almost destitute. Margaret Ann Watson Ford had another child who had gone to work in America, and after hearing of the better living conditions, Margaret Ann Watson Ford had decided to emigrate too.

Also traveling with the Ford family was Margaret Ann Watson Ford's sister Eliza Johnston, together with her husband, Andrew Emslie Johnston, and their two children, William Andrew Johnston, and Catherine Nellie Johnston.
