Afric was the first of the quintet of Jubilee Class liners to be constructed at the Belfast shipbuilders Harland and Wolff.
Launched on November 6th, 1898, Afric's maiden voyage followed just three months later on February 8th, 1899 between her port of registry, Liverpool, and New York.
Built specifically for the Liverpool - Cape Town - Sydney service, Afric was an almost permanent feature on the Australia route, and in fact, apart from her maiden voyage to New York, and one more trip to New York in 1900, she performed on that service throughout her entire career.
On February 12th, 1917, Afric was on her usual run to Cape Town and Sydney, when she was torpedoed in the English Channel just 12 miles off Eddystone Rock by a German U-Boat, UC-66. She sank with the loss of 22 lives, although there were 145 survivors.
